Sport at Falkland
We are very proud of our sporting achievements at Falkland. Each year, our children compete in a range of sporting events – both locally and at county level – and are hugely successful. In this academic year, pupils have represented the school in many sporting competitions and have won at both District and at County level. In particular, football, cricket, Quad kids, Inter schools relays, Thorngrove relays, cross country, tag rugby, Indoor Sports hall Championships, table tennis championships, swimming and cycling.
September 2015 we have been awarded the School Games GOLD mark. This reflects the number of KS2 pupils who participate in sporting clubs and competitions and our commitment as a school to improve and increase the opportunities to play sport both in school and in the wider community.
Our ethos is that sport is about far more than merely competing to win: we want all children, whether they compete for the school or not – to challenge themselves to improve in everything that they undertake and so our emphasis is always on ‘personal best’.
We were delighted that the Government chose to maintain funding for sports in schools. In the financial year 2015 – 2016 Falkland received £9505 to improve sport for children at the school and have used the money in the following ways:
* Affiliation to Park House Academy Sports Partnership – this entitles us to a range of sporting events for pupils as well as training in the teaching of Physical Education.
* Purchasing of new equipment
* Professional development for teachers and supply teacher cover for when training takes place.
* Coaching fees and affiliations to enable us to hold a number of after school and lunchtime sports clubs for the children.
The impact of receiving such funding enables large numbers of our pupils to participate in a wide variety of activities: netball, football, hockey, running, cricket, table tennis, mini tennis, cycling, tag rugby, archery, bowling, tri golf, athletics, cross county relays, swimming and quad kids. These are available both through after school activities and in the main PE curriculum. With the addition of specialist coaches we also hold Judo, Gymnastics and Dance Fusion clubs.
The total number of pupils participating so far this year in clubs is 208 children. We currently have clubs available for pupils in years 3- 6 however later this academic year will see the introduction of a Multi skills club in KS1.
We are school who are passionate about Sport both during the school day and in after school clubs and competitions. We will continue to strive to create a rich and rewarding sporting environment and for all pupils to achieve their ‘personal best’.
